With its blend of striking delta-wing design and deep-penetration capability, the Avro Vulcan was the cornerstone of Britain’s nuclear deterrent through the coldest years of the Cold War. Flown by the RAF from 1956 to 1984, it thundered from V-force dispersal fields to the edge of the stratosphere — and, in 1982, flew the longest bombing raids the world had yet seen, from Ascension Island to the Falklands. XH558, the last airworthy Vulcan, kept the delta’s howl in British skies until 2015.
